Professor Michael Jordan is Appointed Honorary Professor at Tsinghua University

On November 2, Michael Owen Jordan, distinguished professor of the University of California, Berkeley, visited Tsinghua University. Wang Xiqin, president of Tsinghua University, met with Jordan at Tsinghua University, and the two sides exchanged views on further deepening cooperation. Michael Owen Jordan was appointed Honorary Professor at Tsinghua University on the same day. Sun Jiaguang, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, attended the ceremony.

During the meeting, Wang Xiqin welcomed Professor Jordan's visit on behalf of Tsinghua University, and introduced the disciplinary development and talent training of Tsinghua University in the fields of big data and artificial intelligence. He expressed the hope that Professor Jordan will further strengthen cooperation and exchanges with the teachers and students of relevant disciplines in Tsinghua, breed more international cutting-edge scientific research results, and train more international top talents.

Jordan reviewed his research cooperation experience with Tsinghua researchers and friendly exchanges with Tsinghua teachers and students in the past. He said that he is very happy to come to Tsinghua again and looks forward to further expanding the academic exchanges and cooperation with Tsinghua teachers and students in the future.

At the ceremony, Wang Xiqin congratulated Professor Jordan and thanked Professor Jordan for contributing to the development of Tsinghua data science and big data technology research and other fields. He said that Professor Jordan has made important academic contributions in the intersection of computing, statistics, cognitive, biological and social sciences, and is one of the most influential scholars today and an important promoter of the development of artificial intelligence. At present, Tsinghua University is deeply promoting the implementation of the 2030 Global Strategy and comprehensively improving the level of international cooperation. It is expected that Professor Jordan's appointment will further promote Tsinghua's academic research ability and technology transformation level in the field of software science and engineering, and effectively enhance the international influence of relevant disciplines in Tsinghua.

Jordan said he was honored to be appointed as an honorary professor at Tsinghua University. Looking back, there are many proud and happy memories in Qinghua Garden. Looking forward to the future, I look forward to welcoming more new challenges and opportunities here. Tsinghua University, together with many world-renowned universities, has made continuous efforts to promote the development of engineering science and improve people's living standards around the world. I am very pleased to have maintained close cooperation with Tsinghua University and look forward to expanding and deepening this cooperation in the future.

Michael I. Jordan is the Pehong Chen Distinguished Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and the Department of Statistics at the University of California, Berkeley. His research interests bridge the computational, statistical, cognitive, biological and social sciences. Prof. Jordan is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was the inaugural winner of the World Laureates Association (WLA) Prize in 2022. He received the Ulf Grenander Prize from the American Mathematical Society in 2021, the IEEE John von Neumann Medal in 2020, the IJCAI Research Excellence Award in 2016, the David E. Rumelhart Prize in 2015, and the ACM/AAAI Allen Newell Award in 2009. He gave the Inaugural IMS Grace Wahba Lecture in 2022, the IMS Neyman Lecture in 2011, and an IMS Medallion Lecture in 2004. He was a Plenary Lecturer at the International Congress of Mathematicians in 2018. In 2016, Prof. Jordan was named the “most influential computer scientist” worldwide in an article in Science, based on rankings from the Semantic Scholar search engine.

During the visit, Professor Jordan also exchanged with teachers and students in the fields of Tsinghua Industrial Big Data software, intelligent Internet of Things database, machine learning and other fields, and will participate in the 2023 Tsinghua Big Data Intelligent Software Forum held on November 3, making a theme report entitled "Contract, uncertainty and incentive in decentralized machine learning".
