Prof. M. Tamer Ozsu appointed Distinguished Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University online and held an academic lecture

On the morning of October 23, the "Appointment Ceremony and Academic Lecture of Tsinghua University Distinguished Visiting Professor M. Tamer Ozsu" was held in the East Main Building 10-500 conference room and online at the same time. Professor M. Tamer Ozsu from the School of Computer Science of the University of Waterloo was officially appointed as Tsinghua University Distinguished Visiting Professor. Prof. Li Jinliang, Director of International Office, attended the ceremony and presented the appointment letter to Prof. Tamer Ozsu. Prof. Wang Jianmin, Dean of School of Software, presided over the appointment ceremony.

President Wang Jianmin firstly introduced Professor Tamer Ozsu's remarkable achievements in the field of distributed and parallel database, and Mr. Li Jinliang expressed his gratitude to Professor Tamer Osu for his active efforts in academic exchange and cooperation with the School of Software, and hoped that in the future we will work together to promote the construction and development of software engineering discipline in our university.

After the appointment ceremony, Prof. Tamer Osu gave an academic presentation entitled "GRAPH PROCESSING - A PANAROMIC VIEW AND SOME OPEN PROBLEMS". In his presentation, Prof. Tamer Osu used the epidemiological investigation in Tianjin as a case study to introduce the important application of graph database in blocking the spread of neocoronavirus, and to study the spread of neocoronavirus among the population by using graph database to model the human-to-human linkages to assist the epidemiological investigation. The report also details the application and development of graph processing techniques in recent years, as well as a discussion of open issues and a vision for the future.

Professor Tamer Osu has been elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Fellow of the International Computer Society (ACM), and Fellow of the International Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for his notable accomplishments in the field of distributed and parallel databases. He has served as Editor-in-Chief of several top international database journals (e.g. VLDB Journal). In 2001-2005, he was the chair of the ACM Committee on Database Domain Expertise (ACM SIGMOD), and in 2015 he received the SIGMOD Best Paper of the Decade Award from SIGMOD, the highest level conference in the field of data management. His textbook "Principles of Distributed Database System", a classic textbook in the field of distributed data, the third edition was published in 2011, and the Chinese version of the second edition of the book was published by Tsinghua Press in 2002. In addition, Prof. Tamer Ossou is the editor-in-chief of a number of influential academic series, including: the founding editor of the International Computer Society series, the founding editor of the Data Management textbook series, and the editor-in-chief of the Encyclopedia of Database Systems.
